What Makes A Good MBA Student

Although doing well in school in the past and having the right skill set to succeed in a Master's program are important, the greatest determining factor of student success in graduate school and business school is that they have the intrinsic traits that help them keep up in classes and help them remain committed to success for the long haul.

Motivation
The most important characteristic of any graduate level student is motivation. Now, it doesn't necessarily matter what motivates you, but having some type of motivation is key to your success in graduate school. You need to be motivated enough to keep up with the readings, writer your papers, complete your projects, and begin studying early for your tests. You need to be able to put working on your school work ahead of fun opportunities when required since you can see the end in sight.

Determination
Getting your MBA can be tough. At times you may think that the process will never end and that you have no chance of successfully finishing your program. You need to be able to perservere through these difficult times and remain determined to succeed despite any odds. A little determination can go a long way toward helping students, even those without the best skills, to succeed.

Goals
Where are you going? Knowing where you're going makes dealing with where you are much easier. In order to get into a university, you will need to write an application essay and chances are that the committee will be interested in your future short-term and long-term goals. What will you tell them? Are your goals enough to keep you going on the tough days.

Basic Skills
You will also need good basic skills such as reading comprehension, writing, and planning. You will need to be able to read and sythesize large amounts of material. You will be asked to compare and contrast different books and papers. You will need to provide your own opinions and assessments of the work of others in order to be successful. You should have developed these skills in high school and undergraduate courses, but if you are a little rusty, you may want to work on your critical thinking and writing skills before enrolling in classes.

Anyone Can Do It
If you have the right mindset and the right skill set, then you can succeed in business school. Anyone can. With a little determination and motivation, you can go a long way toward reaching your goals, even if you do have to brush up on your basic skills first. Remember, you can do anything you put your mind to and getting your MBA is just another way of proving this to yourself and others.
