Tips on Turning in a Quality Grad School Application
Getting accepted into a quality graduate school program is quite the challenge. But, in addition to the need for impressing the school administrators, you need to show greater need and desire for an MBA degree. So, do yourself a favor and pay extra special attention to the details in your school application. After proving your eligibility by showing a high grade point average from your bachelors degree and passing the schools aptitude test you are ready to provide the school with good references, a resume with cover page, statement of purpose as well as interviewing effectively.
The first document that you will need to turn in is your resume and cover letter. The resume itself should be original and professional. Be sure to include your recent work history and a detailed school history including grades. If you received any scholastic or work accolades on the way, be sure to highlight those. For the work history, it is not like a job application where you need to list every place you have worked in recent years. Rather, include your best work experiences and include a reason of importance in your cover letter somehow relating to leadership experiences or possibly a time of professional growth. Along with the resume, include a statement of purpose. This statement is different than the information found on the cover page. The statement of purpose should include personal and professional reasons as to why you wish to obtain your MBA degree, why you chose the school you did, how you are planning for success including goals as well as what you plan on using the degree for in the workforce. Be sure to include a little bit about some workforce mistakes that you made in the past and how the degree will help you be more successful in the future. Then, put together a good list of references. This group of people that are willing to vouch for you as a person both personally and professionally. If possible, work on gathering the approval and willingness from 5 specific types of people. These people should include one family member, one who is a long time personal friend, one previous supervisor, a school reference from your bachelors degree and finally one person from an organization where you volunteer your time to a cause or civic group. The final and perhaps most challenging portion of the application process is the interview. Dress professionally of course and be prepared to market yourself to the school. Remember, while they of course want your money, the administrators no doubt need to keep the interests of the school in mind. In the end, after graduating with an MBA from their school, you are now a representative of that school and they are looking for the best! by Michael Chasan
