Chasing after and earning a Masters degree in Business Administration is one of the most well respected pursuits in the world of business.

You, as a student, should take note that the simple attainment of an MBA degree does not guarantee you success or an immediate job. Since you will be earning a business degree, you need to get started now in running your own successful business of YOU! When it comes to finding work, the steps are no different than if you were running a brick and mortar business. You as the owner need to involve yourself in marketing, public relations, accounting, sales, networking and leadership.

The first step in running the business of you is to understand and implement the traits of a successful leader. Although it may sound a little funny at first, writing out a personal mission and vision statement is the key to knowing where you are now and then putting together some goals for the future.

Then, once you have your mission and goals set forth, it is time to put them into action. Find a print shop and have some personal business cards made. They do not have to be flashy, but they need to have your name and professional attributes printed on them.

As you work toward finishing your degree, spend time attending career fairs and the trade shows of the industry that you would like to work in one day. This way, you will begin networking in your industry of choice. When meeting people, find out as much about them personally as you can. However, while 90 percent of the conversation should be directed at listening to what they have to say, be sure to plug yourself and your accomplishments a few times. Just be sure not to do too much bragging. The reason behind meeting as many people as possible is so you not only have people to contact and interview for your thesis, but you will also have created a good list of contacts ready to be called to find out where the jobs are. Do not wait until your degree is completed to start your job search.

As you speak with the people that you have met during your time of self promotion and networking, be sure to sell yourself as a person that is interested in working for a particular company. This lets people know that you are interested and proactive in your own future. Professionals will immediately recognize this attribute and will be more willing to keep your contact information on hand should a brief project come up not requiring a full time worker. The point here is to promote you to as many people as possible. Don't you think it would be easier and much more gratifying to have companies fight over you as a potential employee than to be a job seeker hoping and pleading with companies to give you a chance? It is a simple matter of being proactive versus reactive.
