Students are in school for a variety of reasons. Some attend college because their parents tell them that it is the right thing to do after high school. Others are hoping for an idea to pop up while they are in school that will lead them down the path of a life long vocation. As you certainly know there are those people that attend college for the social aspect and the never-ending parties that are prevalent at major universities around the nation. Of course, there are also those people that realize the value of an education and plan on using it to the best of their ability in the workforce. It does not matter whether you are going to school for the social aspect or if you plan on working full time, part time or volunteer time, time management skills will help you achieve your goals.

For most of us, socializing is very easy to do while in college. However, have you considered using social events as an advantage in school? Networking is a skill that you should develop while in college because it is a very important tool that you will use for the remainder of your life. As you attend school functions and even those non school sponsored functions, think about whom you meet. Does that person work in the field you hope to get into? Do they know someone that does? You would be wise in having some business cards made if only for the fact that it has your name and contact information on it. That way, when you meet people you can always network using your personal business cards. It provides you with a memorable, professional appearance. People will remember who you are for a long time because of the unique attribute of using a business card.

If you plan on working full time, part time or volunteering time while in school, be sure to do it at a place that sparks your interest and could possibly lead to future opportunities. Try not to just accept a position somewhere for the simple fact that it fits around your schedule. Always utilize your time to the best of your ability. If you are a business major, try to work for a small company that gives you access to the entrepreneur. If you are a dental student, attempt working for a dentist to learn as much as you can. You surely get the idea by now but realize that work is an opportunity to learn and not just earn a paycheck.

Finally, your study habits should be very high on your priority list while in school. Surely it is not the most fun thing to do in school; however, there is a right and wrong way to go about effective studying. First, set aside time in the day to study in a quiet place that is free from distraction. Spend no more than a half an hour at a time on any given subject. This way, you ensure that your brain is constantly fresh and not being burned out by droning on with the same subject over and over. As an example, if you have three subjects in school, study each subject for half an hour before picking up the same materials again. Also, be sure to take a ten minute break every hour to give your eyes a break from the computer screen.
