Disadvantages Of a Full Time Program

Although there are many advantages to attending graduate school full-time, there are also some definite disadvantages. You need to consider all your options and the pros and cons before you join a full-time program. You don't want to start school full-time just to find out that you need to drop classes a few weeks into school.

Inability to Work Full-Time

One of the biggest problems with going to business school full-time is that it may be difficult or impossible to work full-time. Although it may sound simple in theory, you have your time at work, your time in class, and your time studying to account for, not including the time you spend having a life. Working full-time for some programs may not even be allowed. You want to consider your potential work load before signing up for full-time status.

Company May Not Pay

Some companies will not pay for their employees to enter a full-time program. Why? Well, often they feel that you will be stretched too thin to still be efficient at work, and the truth is that they may be right. Before signing up for a full load of classes, you should check your employee handbook to find out how many hours of classes they will pay for and what other rules may apply. At some companies you may have to choose between dropping classes and your job.

Added Stress

Do you really want more stress in your life? I'm guessing the answer there is a resounding no. Taking full-time classes can add an extra level of stress that you may not be able to handle. Even if you can handle it mentally, your body may not be able to handle it physically. Working and going to school full-time can cut out any time you usually spend relaxing and may harm your body's immune system. You have to be careful when you are considering what the added stress will do to you both mentally and physically.

Family Support

If you are working and going to school full-time, you may lose your family's support. They want your time and attention as well. If you spend all your time out of the house, your family may begin to resent your educational pursuits. And, more than anything, you need their support during this time. Be sure to talk to them and get their opinions before you dive into full-time work and full-time school.

Think Long and Hard

Before you sign up for full-time classes, I suggest you think long and hard about how it will affect you, your family, and your job. If the cons outweigh the pros then you should consider going to school part-time instead of full-time. More than anything make sure your family and your employer support whatever decision you make.
