If you are like most people, you have decided to pursue an MBA in the hopes of earning more money. Since there are only about 300,000 MBA graduates in the country, the opportunities are definitely available. As you already know, there are a myriad of different schools that offer this type of degree. It should be noted, however, that not all degrees are created equal, and that they should contain the common elements of regional accreditation of the school, leadership courses, case studies, internships, understanding of globalization, networking and, the possibility of work.

To begin with, every school worth the cost will have a regional accreditation status. This means the school belongs to a group of administrators and has a sole representative. This group decides upon the rules for acceptance and the course content to ensure it meets the standards of scholastic excellence set by the Department of Education, and the regionally accrediting body.

Secondly, take a look at the course content. Since most MBA graduates will be in middle to upper management, some of the courses should involve leadership. All too often there are people in managerial roles that can perform the work they preside over quite well, yet they posses an inability to communicate and lead effectively. Learning how to communicate with people, understand ethics, take on leadership responsibilities, and work in a team environment are necessary skills if you are going to be successful in the workforce.

There should also be areas of the degree where students are taught how to apply the MBA principles as it relates to working with other countries. Since the world economic community seems to be slowly assimilating into one big marketplace, understanding customs and lifestyles of a foreign business community will definitely provide a vocational edge.

Here are a few questions to ask: Does the degree program offer any sort of case studies or internships in addition to classroom learning? Case studies are an effective means of learning because of the real world examples that they provide. Using these in conjunction with the syllabus also allows an opportunity for the teacher to not provide the final outcome allowing students to come up with their own conclusions.
