The typical college student today is a lot different than the stereotypical 18 to 22 year old college student that we usually think of. In fact, this age group compromises only about one quarter of all of the college students in the United States. We see more adults than ever going back to college to create more of an opportunity for themselves in the modern workforce. The problem that this creates is simply the fact that not everyone can drop their financial responsibilities in order to pursue a degree in the day time. So what is a student to do? There are a couple of different options that schools are now offering. These include: evening classes, part-time schooling, online schooling or a combination of these.

Online schools are one of the hottest trends in education today. This option has been around for a relatively short amount of time, yet is quickly becoming the preferred method of schooling. It has been shown to work effectively for working adults, working parents or those that simply live too far away from a traditional brick and mortar school.

Although online schools are not traditionally the cheapest way to go financially, students enjoy the freedom of time that it offers. With online schooling, students are typically assigned projects and assignments at the beginning of the class. They are then responsible for reading for a little bit every night in the assigned textbook and then turning in any written assignments on their due date. In addition, students are typically placed into study groups for larger, more complex assignments that are due towards the end of the class. This combination of individual and group study along with reading instructor lectures provides an all around good education for those that are able to be self motivated to finish. It should be noted, however, that most online programs are business related since classes like chemistry and biology are best left to schools that have the appropriate facilities.

The next option that students have would be along the more traditional route of attending a school and classroom one or more nights per week. This type of schooling is great for those that have evenings free to attend a couple of classes and then complete the corresponding assignments. Typically, however, this is a slower route to earning a degree because working full time and attending school full time (12 or more credits per semester) is very difficult and can be a daunting task especially if their are children involved. The positive side to this option is that students can attend at their leisure if there is no hurry and they also will have the option of attending a state university or community college and the credits will all be recognized and transferable to other schools.

The final option is actually just a combination of the online school and the brick and mortar classroom. For those degree programs where a lab is necessary or some brief classroom work needs to be accomplished; schools are now offering these classes as a way for most of the work to be completed at home while a small percentage requires a trip to a school.
